How much does a horse eat?

There has always been something soothing about horses. The way they stand, the way they walk, and even the way they eat! All their movements translate into one word, and that is "zen."

Horses, in the animal kingdom, are the epitome of both grace and serenity. That's why it really doesn't come as a surprise why horses have always been the animal of choice amongst many kings and queens.

Just take a look at this beautiful horse, for example. There is nothing more relaxing than watching and listening to a horse munch away on its hay when everything else is quiet.

It truly lets you forget about all the stresses of the world for a while!

How Much Do Horses Eat?

Horses are designed to eat for most of the day and need to eat little and often.

It is recommended that a horse consume 1.5 to 2% of its body weight in roughage a day. (1) This should consist mainly of good quality hay and grass. 

What Do Horses Eat?

Horses require a huge amount of roughage in their diet. (2) The majority should be hay or grass to ensure the best digestive health. Grains should be used only when a horse needs a bit extra.

Horses just love to eat! As you see in the video, this horse is thoroughly enjoying his hay!

Water Is Also Important

Besides hay, horses also drink a lot of water. The majority do and should drink between 5 to 10 gallons of water a day.

Horses need free choice access to water 24/7. It should be kept clean and fresh for their health. Also, many horses will not drink if the water is not fresh or dirty.
