Expert Tips

Saddle pads are not as straightforward as you might think.

To help you make the right choice, here are some do's and don'ts from an expert saddler:

    1. Consider your horse's comfort: Ensure the half pad fits well and is comfortable for your horse. A comfortable horse will perform better and be happier during rides.
    1. Don't buy a one-size-fits-all pad: While some half pads are marketed as one-size-fits-all, finding a pad that fits your saddle and horse is crucial. Every horse is different, and so are their needs.
    1. Check for proper saddle fit: A half pad should complement your saddle's fit, not correct an ill-fitting saddle. Be sure your saddle fits your horse well before adding a half pad.
    1. Don't forget about material: Different materials provide different benefits. Consider your horse's needs and preferences when selecting a half-pad material – options include gel, foam, sheepskin, and more.
    1. Clean and maintain your pad regularly: Regular cleaning and maintenance will prolong your half pad's lifespan and ensure your horse stays comfortable.
    1. Don't hesitate to consult a professional: If you're unsure about choosing the right half pad or fitting it properly, consult an expert saddler for guidance.

By keeping these expert tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to finding the perfect half pad for your horse's comfort and performance.

As a seasoned equestrian, I've come across many types of half pads, including this HORZE Fur Half Pad, which I've included for those looking for a more budget-friendly option.

Physical Attributes

    • Quilted fabric
    • Non-slip fleece
    • Billet Straps

#5 Thinline Ultra Sheepskin Comfort Half Pad - Best for Comfort and Pressure Points Relief

As a horse enthusiast, I can't discuss the best half-pad brands without mentioning Thinline's products.

Not only are Thinline pads trendy, but they truly excel in quality and performance!

Thinline stands out with its extra-thin pads, offering exceptional shock absorption through a unique open-cell foam that minimizes bulk under the saddle.

I was particularly impressed with the Thinline Ultra Sheepskin Comfort Half Pad.

It features a sheepskin underside and a Thinline pad on top, providing added protection.

It also includes pockets for shims, and I highly recommend their regular Thinline pads without the extra features.

Thinline's design incorporates a unique open-cell foam.

This offers excellent shock absorption without adding bulk, making it ideal for custom-made saddles that may struggle with fit when using thicker pads.

Expert Tips

If you aim to encourage your horse to move more freely, the Thinline Ultra Sheepskin Comfort Half Pad is an excellent tool.

It can also significantly improve your riding experience.

Thinline claims that their pad design allows for increased freedom of movement for the horse while helping the rider sit the gaits more easily.

Its slim design ensures a comfortable fit for both you and your horse.

#7 Lami-Cell Memory Foam Half Pad - Best for Lightweight and Pressure Distribution

Lami-Cell's Memory Foam Half Pad is among my favorites as someone who appreciates memory foam in equine half-pads.

This discreet and simple pad is effective and comes at an excellent price. Plus, it comes at a great price.

Physical Attributes

    • Memory foam
    • Black
    • Faux leather trim in the same color

    • 1 to 1 ¼ inch thick
    • One size

Benefits & Drawbacks of Lami-Cell Memory Foam Half Pad

Benefits

Drawbacks

Lightweight

Only available in one size

Shock absorbing

May be too thick for some saddle fittings

Helps keep the saddle in place

Memory foam can retain heat

Promotes rider's balance

Adjustable to fit various saddles

How it Compares to Others and Why

The Lami-Cell Memory Foam Half Pad stands out for its excellent value compared to other memory foam half pads on the market, which often come at a higher price.

Its affordability makes it an attractive option for those trying memory foam pads without breaking the bank.

Expert Tips

While I appreciate memory foam pads, they do have one downside: the foam doesn't last as long as gel or the material found in Eco Gold pads.

Over time, the foam may lose its shape, especially where the saddle sits and bears weight.

Squeeze it between your hands to check if your pad is still providing shock absorption. If you feel the pad is no longer effective, it's time to replace it.

#8 ECP Equine Comfort Products Correction Half Saddle Pad - Best for Saddle Fit Stabilization

ECP’s Equine Comfort Pad is one of the best shimmable half-pad options outside Prolite.

As many horse owners know, their horses can change shape along their backs depending on weight, fitness, and muscle development.

A shimmable pad allows you to insert different width pads to adjust for these changes.

They also allow you to use different sizes in the front and rear of the pad, which means you can adjust certain saddle parts if necessary.

Physical Attributes

    • Brushed Cotton topside
    • Density foam shims
    • 2 straps to attach it to the girth straps

Sizes and Measurements

    • 4 pockets for shims
    • Lots of great color choices
    • 22-inches along the top

Benefits & Drawbacks of ECP Equine Comfort Products Correction Half Saddle Pad

Benefits

Drawbacks

Shock absorbent

The foam shims wear out a bit too quickly

Adjustable

Material may not be as durable

Helps stabilize saddle fit issues

Not suitable for all saddle types

Breathable material

Distributes pressure evenly

How it Compares to Others and Why

One thing I really like about this pad compared to others is that you can adjust the shims to make it thinner or thicker, depending on the saddle and horse.

It also comes with a cotton cover, which is really easy to through in the wash.

Expert Tips

Remember that this pad's shims are not washable, so be sure to remove them before washing the cover.

What Other Horse Parents Are Saying About ECP Equine Comfort Products Correction Half Saddle Pad

Shannon, a horse owner and saddle fitter, highly recommends this pad as a budget-friendly alternative to the Fleeceworks pad:

"Fabulous alternative to buying the $150+ Fleeceworks pad. I'm a saddle fitter and use these to help demos fit client horses during appointments."

Where to Buy

The ECP Equine Comfort Pad is available for purchase on Amazon and Walmart.

#9 Fleeceworks Half Pad Classic - Best for Anatomical Correctness

Fleeceworks makes some of the best half pads. They are traditional with modern features integrated to make them even better for your horse.

This pad uses really wool, the only material worth using outside of gel or memory foam. I like that they designed the pad to provide wither relief.

This is good for every horse as you want to avoid pressure in that area, but it is perfect for horses with high withers.

Physical Attributes

    • Elastic just below the top line
    • Sheepskin
    • Cotton stitched top

Sizes and Measurements

    • Comes in small, medium, large, and extra large
    • Size length is 18 to 21 inches

Benefits & Drawbacks of Fleeceworks Half Pad Classic

Benefits

Drawbacks

Suitable for all-purpose, close contact, and dressage saddles

Expensive

Anatomically correct

Integrated elastics may lose elasticity over time

Integrated elastics relieve pressure

May not suit all horse body types

Provides good shock absorption

Enhances comfort for the horse

How it Compares to Others and Why

Fleeceworks is a high-end brand which makes it more expensive than many other options.

Its integrated elastic strips are unique in that they stretch vertically instead of horizontally.

This prevents the shoulder’s rotational pull from adding unwanted pressure on the back.

Expert Tips

These pads are washable, but follow the instructions using a suitable wool detergent.

Also, even though this pad is expensive, don’t be swayed by cheaper fleece versions that are not really wool.

Fleece in general, is a pretty terrible material for a half pad. It does not provide the shock-absorbing protection that wool does.

It is also hotter, whereas wool helps to regulate temperature.

My advice is never to buy a fleece half-pad, as it flattens quickly, and the only thing it does is add bulk under the saddle without the benefits.

Where to Buy

The Fleeceworks Half Pad Classic is available for purchase on Amazon and Ebay.

#10 Mattes Gold All Purpose Correction Half Pad - Best for High-Quality Construction and Materials

Mattes is one of the gold standard half pad brands. They have correction pads with shims, pads without shims, and those shaped to fit dressage saddles.

This pad does not have sheepskin panels but does have wool attached to the fabric. Despite the price, Mattes is one of the most popular wool half-pads amongst riders.

Physical Attributes

    • Wool backed fabric
    • 2 straps to attach to your saddle

Sizes and Measurements

    • 1 ¼ inch thick wool backing
    • Medium or Large

Benefits & Drawbacks of Mattes Gold All Purpose Correction Half Pad

Benefits

Drawbacks

High-quality materials and construction provide excellent shock absorption

Expensive compared to other half pad options on the market

The wool backing only ensures the pad stays softer after washing and dries faster

May not suit all saddle types

Enhances comfort for the horse

Wool may require more care and maintenance

Adjustable to fit various saddles

How it Compares to Others and Why

The Mattes Gold All Purpose Correction Half Pad stands out among other wool half pads due to its exceptional quality.

However, the higher price may not suit everyone's budget. For those looking for more affordable options, gel or memory foam alternatives may be better.

Expert Tips

I've used the Mattes Gold All Purpose Correction Half Pad on my horse and found it an excellent investment.

The wool backing provided excellent shock absorption, and I noticed a significant improvement in my horse's comfort.

However, I understand that the price might not suit everyone, so I recommend exploring other options if you're on a tight budget.

#11 Horze Harleigh Sheepskin Rising Pad - Best for Shock-Absorbing Qualities

As an equestrian enthusiast who's tried my fair share of half-pads, I have to say - the Horze Harleigh Sheepskin Rising Pad is a standout.

Sure, it's a bit of a splurge, but it's like treating yourself to a fancy dessert after a week of salads.

Now, let's talk sheepskin. If you've never had the joy of caressing real sheepskin, here's your chance.

The open mesh spine channel is a godsend, especially during sweltering summer rides.

My horse, Buttercup, appreciates the extra ventilation - it's like built-in air conditioning for her back!

The sizing is flexible, too, accommodating saddles from 14 to 18.5 inches. But remember folks, size does matter when it comes to half-pads.

You don't want it creeping under those saddle panels, causing pressure points that'll make your horse grumpy.

Physical Attributes

    • Real sheepskin
    • Open mesh spine channel

Sizes and Measurements

    • Pony size suits 14 to 16.5-inch saddles
    • Full-size suits 16 to 18.5 inch saddles

Now, let's get down to the pros and cons.

Benefits & Drawbacks of Horze Harleigh Sheepskin Rising Pad

Benefits

Drawbacks

The shock-absorbing qualities of this pad are top-notch

Expensive but a cheaper option than Mattes

Mesh spine channel helps airflow

May not suit all saddle types

Durable

Sheepskin may require more maintenance/cleaning

Provides extra cushioning for rider's comfort

Helps in saddle stabilization

How it Compares to Others and Why

When considering competitors, the Fleeceworks Therawool Half Pad and LeMieux Lambskin Half Pad certainly hold their own in the game.

However, they lack the oh-so-important feature of a mesh spine channel.

And trust me; your horse will notice the difference!

Expert Tips

A half-pad size needs to be based on your saddle size.

If it’s too small the edge will sit under the saddle panels, creating pressure points. Size your half-pad so that it is longer than your saddle.

What Other Horse Parents Are Saying About Horze Harleigh Sheepskin Rising Pad

To wrap it up, I'll share a nugget from fellow horse parent Jackie: "LOVE this half pad.

Very high quality, and the perfect ventilation channel, since my horse really sweats..." Couldn't have said it better myself, Jackie!

So, while the Horze Harleigh Sheepskin Rising Pad might make your wallet a tad lighter, consider it an investment in your horse's comfort and a luxury for your equestrian experience.

#12 WeatherBeeta Memory Foam Comfort Horse Half Pad - Best for Quick Drying and Even Pressure Distribution

As an equestrian with years of saddle time, I've found that a quality half-pad can be a game-changer.

WeatherBeeta, a brand we all know and love for its top-notch horse blankets, also brings us the Memory Foam Comfort Horse Half Pad, which has become a staple in my tack room.

Let's talk about physical attributes.

This pad isn't just thick; it's memory foam thick.

Think about sinking into a cushy mattress after a long day—that's how my horse feels when I saddle up with this pad.

The soft and breathable material keeps my horse comfortable even on long rides.

It's also non-slip (because who wants a saddle doing the cha-cha?), and it's anti-microbial—bonus points for hygiene!

Physical Attributes

    • Non-slip
    • Memory foam
    • Soft and breathable material
    • Anti-microbial

Sizes and Measurements

On the sizing front, the WeatherBeeta pad comes in small (19 inches) and large (22.5 inches), and you can choose from classic black or sleek white.

    • Sizes small, and large
    • Small length 19-inches
    • Large length 22.5-inches
    • Comes in black or white

Benefits & Drawbacks of WeatherBeeta Memory Foam Comfort Horse Half Pad

Now, let's weigh up the pros and cons.

The pad dries quickly if caught in a downpour (tested during an unexpected spring shower), and it does a stellar job distributing pressure evenly across my horse's back.

Some might find it a touch too thick, but in my experience, my horse seems to appreciate the extra cushioning.

It's anti-slip, so my saddle stays put even during more vigorous training sessions.

Benefits

Drawbacks

Dries quickly if it gets wet in the rain

Some might find it a little too thick

Helps evenly distribute pressure

Memory foam may retain heat

Anti-slip

May not suit all saddle types

Provides good shock absorption

Enhances rider's balance

How it Compares to Others and Why

Regarding price, the WeatherBeeta Memory Foam pad is the budget-friendly hero of half-pads.

It's easy on your wallet, especially when you compare it to pricier options like the Acavallo Gel Out Seat Saver or the LeMieux Pro-Sorb System.

Yet, it still does an admirable job of providing comfort and stability.

Expert Tips

A word of advice: keep an eye on wear and tear. If the pad starts losing shape, it's time to replace it.

#13 LeMieux Lambskin Half Pad - Best Value for a Wool Pad

As an equestrian with countless hours in the saddle, I can't speak highly enough about the LeMieux Lambskin Half Pad.

LeMieux is a brand that has earned my trust over the years, and this half-pad is a testament to its quality.

Physical Attributes

The physical attributes of this pad shine through in practice. The Merino wool underside provides a luxurious cushion that my horse finds comfortable.

The saddle attachment straps are practical and make securing the pad a breeze, saving me valuable pre-ride prep time.

Plus, the rolled edge gives it a chic look that stands out in both the stable and the show ring.

    • Merino wool underside
    • Saddle attachment straps
    • Rolled edge

Sizes and Measurements

It's available in small, medium, and large sizes, and comes in dark brown, black, and white, offering flexibility for various saddle sizes and personal preferences.

    • Available in dark brown, black, and white
    • It comes in small, medium, and large

Benefits & Drawbacks of LeMieux Lambskin Half Pad

The pros of the LeMieux Lambskin Half Pad are compelling. The price is reasonable, especially for a wool pad.

The wool does an excellent job regulating temperature - I've noticed my horse stays comfortable even during longer rides in variable weather.

However, the thickness of the pad may not be to everyone's liking. If you prefer a thinner pad, this might be a bit too plush for you.

Benefits

Drawbacks

Good price for a wool pad

These pads are pretty thick, so they might not suit everyone

Wool helps regulate temperature and provides excellent cushioning

May require more care and maintenance than synthetic pads

Looks good enough for shows

Natural material

How it Compares to Others and Why

Compared to other half-pads on the market, the LeMieux is a bit more traditional in its design.

While it doesn't boast some of the more modern features found in half-pads like the Acavallo Gel Out Seat Saver, it excels in its simplicity and the natural benefits of wool.

Expert Tips

A word of advice: pair the LeMieux pad with a suitable saddle pad.

LeMieux's range of jumping pads work perfectly with this half-pad and are versatile for both shows and schooling at home.

#14 Kavallerie 3D Air-Mesh Fleece Half Pad - Best for Heat Release and Saddle Bridging

As an avid equestrian, I've had my fair share of experiences with various half pads, and the Kavallerie 3D Air-Mesh Fleece Half Pad stands out as one of the top contenders.

Its gel mesh construction is top-notch, and I've been impressed by its durability and performance.

The design of the pad is quite remarkable. The anatomical top line is a game-changer - it lifts the pad into the saddle gullet, eliminating any pressure on the horse's spine.

From my experience, this design feature enhances the horse's comfort level during long rides.

The gel offers excellent grip, preventing the saddle from slipping and reducing the risk of rubs.

This detail demonstrates Kavallerie's understanding of horse and rider needs.

Moreover, the gel material doesn't degrade easily or quickly, meaning it maintains its shape and shock-absorbing ability longer than other materials.

Physical Attributes

    • Shock absorbing
    • Gel Half Pad
    • Fleece lining
    • Velcro strap
    • Anatomic topline
    • Mesh fabric
    • Gel holes panels

Sizes and Measurements

This Kavallerie saddle pad is flexible and adept at conforming to a horse's back, filling any gaps created by a lack of muscle or the saddle.

It's a one-size-fits-all solution, which can be both a boon and a limitation - it might not be the best fit for ponies or smaller horses.

    • One size
    • Comes in white or black
    • 23-inches long Top line

Benefits & Drawbacks of Kavallerie 3D Air-Mesh Fleece Half Pad

Regarding benefits and drawbacks, the Kavallerie half pad offers a lot.

It's lightweight, machine washable, and helps evenly distribute pressure.

Its gel holes help release heat, making it ideal for warmer climates or intense training sessions.

How it Compares to Others and Why

The Kavallerie half pad distinguishes itself from competitors such as the Fleeceworks Therawool Half Pad or the LeMieux Pro-Sorb Lambskin Half Pad.

Its unique use of gel mesh and excellent shock-absorbing capabilities make it stand out.

However, its higher price point and limited sizing options could deter some riders.

Expert Tips

As a seasoned rider, I recommend always placing a half-pad directly under your saddle and on top of a saddle pad.

Square jumping pads work exceptionally well with half-pads. Remember, half pads can affect the fit of your saddle, so choose wisely.

How to Choose the Best Half Pads for Horses

Choosing the best half pad for horses will depend on your budget, horse’s needs, saddle fitting, and personal preferences.

Do You Need a Half Pad?

This is a question that often has two very strong opinions. The old-school equestrian will say you should never use a half-pad if your saddle fits your horse correctly.

I feel that providing extra protection for your horse’s back is never a bad thing.

However, you do need to consider a few things before picking your pad.

If your saddle is narrow or fits your horse like a glove, adding a half-pad can cause more harm than good such as increasing pressure.

The best thing to do is to work with your saddle fitter to ensure your saddle will fit well with the pad. Then you have the best of both worlds.

What Half Pad Do You Need?

Look at your horse to find the type of half pad most suits.

Young horses are still developing and will change shape as they begin their riding careers.

For these types of horses, a shimmable half pad is a good option, as you can adjust the saddle fit.

Wool is one of my favorite choices, even though it is old-fashioned.

The wool keeps its shape under the saddle and creates air pockets excellent at absorbing shock. It is breathable and soaks up sweat well.

You can use them on any horse. The downside to these pads is the cost.

Avoid fleece, even if you think it would make a nice substitute for wool. It won’t. It does not have a good moisture-wicking benefit and does not help even out pressure.

They are pretty poor at absorbing shock as well. Synthetic material fleece just doesn’t work in the same way as the real thing.

Memory foam is a good choice but is not as effective at shock absorption as some other materials as it is limited to as far as it can compress.

Gel is one of the best materials, especially if you want a durable, thin pad. The only issue with these types of pads is that they are heavier than the other materials.

FAQs

I've answered some common questions to help you decide if getting a half pad is for you.

What do half-pads do for horses?

Half pads help distribute pressure evenly on the horse’s back. They also help reduce concussions which can lead to soreness.

You can also use a half pad to help a saddle fit better and prevent slippage.

Are half pads good?

Yes, half pads are an excellent piece of equestrian gear.

But you must make sure to use good materials and that it improves the fit of your saddle. Using a pad wrongly can actually cause harm and not good.

Do horses need half pads?

Old school thought will tell you no.

But if used correctly, it can only benefit the horse, making it happier and less likely to suffer discomfort.

Conclusion

I hope you’ve found the half-pad for you and your horse on my guide. Every type is represented here, and there are some excellent value options.

Final Recommendation

My winner is the ECP Air Ride Shock Absorbing Half Saddle Pad because it is made with good materials and is reasonably priced.

However, all of the pads here are excellent choices; if your budget can stretch, I would choose any of them.
